Five 2020 Resolutions for a Writer

To begin the New Year, be generous and brave with yourself. You're a writer -- nobody else is going to. Set goals that you can meet -- specific enough to be challenging, yet general enough to be forgiving and inspiring. Here are mine:

1. Build resiliency. Remind yourself every day that you exist for a reason despite all evidence to the contrary. When everything around you tells you that it is futile to create anything new, remember that your purpose shines brighter when the world turns darker, and for this reason alone, it is worthwhile to push forward. By small increments, resistance can overcome any obstacle.

2. Be creative. Make space for improvisation in your daily plans. Trust that all outcomes are preordained and your job is to tune in to the well-established, yet hidden patterns of existence.

3. Be thankful. Challenges are the greatest blessing. If it was easy, any fool could do what you do. If you didn't have to struggle, you'd never succeed.  Process is everything. We might not even have a civilization to satirize in another couple of decades.

4. Work hard. Read everything you can. Write in the morning, at night, whenever you have a spare hour or two. Get your thoughts in writing, in clear prose that is uncomplicated and direct but unafraid of a deep dive every now and then.

5. Pray: for inspiration, redemption, forgiveness, understanding, and vision.
